Micron announced the completion of GDDR6 memory! 16nm process, speed 14GHz
Source: OneChip Electronics | Author:electronics-101 | Release time :2021-07-20 | 542 Views: | Share:

his morning, Micron published a technical article on its official blog, stating that GDDR6 memory has completed all the design work and passed internal verification. The first ones are chips with pin bandwidths of 12Gbps and 14Gbps.

pin bandwidth can be understood as equivalent frequency, namely 12GHz and 14GHz.

In fact, those who are interested should have noticed that GDDR5X used in some Pascal graphics cards has actually reached 12GHz, such as EVGA's GTX1080TIFTW3ELITE, TITANXp has also reached 11.4Gbps.

However, GDDR6 still has its own advantages. Single chip is up to 32Gb (currently 8Gb and 16Gb), dual channel, voltage 1.35V (compared to GDDR5 1.5V), internal electronic interference is reduced, and the manufacturing process is also upgraded from G5X's 20nm It is 16nm.

Micron said that now they can shift their energy to improving mass production yield and developing faster GDDR6 memory. After all, the theoretical limit is 16GHz.

Micron conservatively estimates that GDDR6 memory will be commercially available in the first half of next year, but NVIDIA has long stated that it will make its debut. After all, Samsung and SK Hynix are also preparing.

Considering that CES2018 is a bit aggressive, it is estimated that at the GTC conference in March, the Volta-based GeForce gaming graphics card with GDDR6 will be released. However, due to cost reasons, I estimate that it may only be used on GTX2080/Ti (hypothetical name). Besides, G5X is not bad.

In addition, it is rumored that AMD will also launch GDDR6, because HBM2 is too expensive to be popularized on the Redeon production line.
